# Build a Mission

Every [Mission](/missions/what-are-missions.md) is built on the web through a structured process. Depending on the type, you'll go through up to 4 steps: define the basic attributes, build the content, create regional versions, and configure behavior.

This page covers everything you need to know to build a Mission from start to finish.

***

## How a Mission is structured

<table><thead><tr><th width="207">Step</th><th>What you do</th><th>Which types</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>1. Mission Attributes</strong></td><td>Title, guide, alert, tags/categories</td><td>All types</td></tr><tr><td><strong>2. Content Builder</strong></td><td>Add questions, media content, or quiz items</td><td>All except Task</td></tr><tr><td><strong>3. Geographic Editions</strong></td><td>Create localized versions per region</td><td>Survey, Checklist, Media, Test, Audit</td></tr><tr><td><strong>4. Mission Settings</strong></td><td>Configure workflows and mission behavior</td><td>All types</td></tr></tbody></table>

{% hint style="warning" %}
[Tasks](/missions/what-are-missions/task.md) skip steps 2 and 3 — they're intentionally simple. [Tickets](/missions/what-are-missions/ticket.md) skip step 3 and don't have a Guide.
{% endhint %}

### 1. Mission Attributes

Every Mission starts here.&#x20;

<table><thead><tr><th width="175">Field</th><th width="109">Required</th><th width="299.3333740234375">What it means</th><th>Limits</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Title</td><td>Yes</td><td>The name employees see. Must be unique per mission type.</td><td>Max 36 characters</td></tr><tr><td>Guide</td><td>No</td><td>Short instructions on how to perform the Mission</td><td>Max 180 characters</td></tr><tr><td>Alert</td><td>No</td><td>A warning displayed before employees start (e.g. "Wear gloves")</td><td>Max 180 characters</td></tr><tr><td>Categories / Tags</td><td>Yes</td><td>For organizing and filtering your library</td><td>—</td></tr></tbody></table>

{% hint style="info" %}
Media Missions also have a **Sub-title** field (max 24 characters).&#x20;
{% endhint %}

### 2. Content Builder

The Builder is where you add the Mission's interactive content. This is the "body" of the Mission — the questions employees answer, the media they watch, or the checks they perform.

#### Question types

<table><thead><tr><th width="158.333251953125">Type</th><th width="299.6666259765625">How it works</th><th>Options</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Single Select</strong></td><td>Employee picks one answer from a list</td><td>2–20 choices</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Multi Select</strong></td><td>Employee picks one or more answers</td><td>2–20 choices</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Yes / No</strong></td><td>Simple two-option choice</td><td>2 (+ optional N/A)</td></tr><tr><td><strong>True / False</strong></td><td>Simple two-option choice</td><td>2 (+ optional N/A)</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Text</strong></td><td>Employee types a free-text response</td><td>Open field</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Number</strong></td><td>Employee enters a numeric value</td><td>Formats: temperature (°F/°C), time, count, currency ($, €, ﷼), weight (lbs, kg), distance (cm, m, km)</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Multi Yes or No</strong></td><td>Employee answers Yes or No for <em>each item</em> in a list</td><td>2–20 items</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Media</strong></td><td>Embeds a Media Mission that must be completed first</td><td>No typed response</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Person</strong></td><td>Employee selects a colleague from a list</td><td>Single or multi-select</td></tr></tbody></table>

#### What you can add to any question

**Photo or Video Proof** — require employees to capture visual evidence with the device camera. Options:

<table><thead><tr><th width="221.333251953125">Setting</th><th>What the employee must do</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Photo only</td><td>Take a photo</td></tr><tr><td>Video only</td><td>Record a video</td></tr><tr><td>Photo <strong>and</strong> Video</td><td>Provide both</td></tr><tr><td>Photo <strong>or</strong> Video</td><td>Choose one or both</td></tr></tbody></table>

{% embed url="<https://files.gitbook.com/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FLLw6mmkCzf1jpC9LdKjS%2Fuploads%2F3ucjqV9X9q4xfg0Rk7uB%2FMission%20Content%20Builder.gif?alt=media&token=88e0048a-b1ba-4d92-a1d4-44fc8425bca9>" %}

Evidence must be **captured live** — uploading from the photo library is not allowed. Questions missing required proof are highlighted in pink on mobile. Available on all question types except Media.

**Ticket triggers** — automatically alert management when an employee selects a specific response. Available on all types except Media and Person.

**Points** ([Tests](/missions/what-are-missions/test.md) and [Audits](/missions/what-are-missions/audit.md) only) — assign a weight of 1–5 per question to influence the final score. Text and Person questions are always worth 1 point.

**Feedback** ([Tests](/missions/what-are-missions/test.md) and [Audits](/missions/what-are-missions/audit.md) only) — an explanation shown to the employee after they answer, regardless of whether they got it right or wrong.

**Assign Media** ([Tests](/missions/what-are-missions/test.md) only) — when an employee answers incorrectly, automatically assign a training [Media Mission](/missions/what-are-missions/media.md) to their personal board.

#### Grouping questions with Dividers

For Missions with many questions, use **Dividers** to group them into named sections. In the Builder, click **Add Divider** between questions and give it a name (max 24 characters).

On mobile, questions appear in [collapsible groups](/mobile-app/perform-a-mission.md#dividers). Employees can tap **Expand All** or **Collapse All**. Dividers are visual only — they don't affect scoring or responses. Available in [Surveys](/missions/what-are-missions/survey.md), [Checklists](/missions/what-are-missions/checklist.md), [Tests](/missions/what-are-missions/test.md), and [Audits](/missions/what-are-missions/audit.md).

#### Reordering

Use the arrow buttons to rearrange questions. You can also reorder response options within a question. The Builder includes a **Table of Contents** panel on the left for quick navigation through long Missions.

### 3. Geographic Editions

If your organization operates across regions with different regulations, create editions — localized versions of the same Mission with different content per region.

**Example:** A "Fridge Temperature Check" Checklist with different maximum temperatures per state: California = 5°F, Florida = 7°F, New York = 4°F. The system automatically shows the correct edition based on the employee's location.

**How to create an Edition:**

1. Open a Mission details
2. Click **Geography** (top right)
3. Select the states, counties, or cities for this edition
4. Customize the content
5. Save

Locations not assigned to any edition get the default version. Available for [Survey](/missions/what-are-missions/survey.md), [Checklist](/missions/what-are-missions/checklist.md), [Media](/missions/what-are-missions/media.md), [Test](/missions/what-are-missions/test.md), and [Audit](/missions/what-are-missions/audit.md). Not available for [Task](/missions/what-are-missions/task.md) or [Ticket](/missions/what-are-missions/ticket.md).

### 4. Mission Settings

Settings control how the Mission behaves on mobile and help to build a whole workflow — timing, urgency, rewards, alerts, and more. All settings are optional and disabled by default. See [Mission Settings](/missions/how-to-guides/configure-mission-settings.md) for the complete reference.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Settings are only available in your Organization. Missions in the Marketplace don't include settings — you configure them after importing missions.
{% endhint %}

## Shortcuts: Duplicate and Compare

**Duplicate a Mission** — create an exact copy of an existing Mission as a starting point. In Library → select a Mission → Actions → **Duplicate Mission** → enter a new unique title. The copy starts in [Draft status](/missions/how-to-guides/publish-a-mission.md) with all content and settings inherited. Only works within the same Mission type.

**Compare Missions** — view two Missions side by side to spot differences before deciding which to keep. In Library → select a Mission → Actions → **Compare** → select a second Mission. Read-only — make edits after closing the comparison.

See [Shortcuts](/missions/how-to-guides/shortcuts-and-useful-actions.md) for full details on both actions.

## Creating on mobile

[System Admins](/your-organization/people.md#roles) can also create Missions from the mobile app:

1. Go to **Missions → Create**
2. Select the Mission type
3. Enter your Personal Code
4. Fill in Main Info → Settings → Builder (if applicable)
5. Save

## Good to know

* Mission titles must be **unique per type** — but you can have a Task and a Survey with the same name, or the same name in different [folders](/missions/how-to-guides/organize-missions-with-folders.md)
* Missions created from the Taskmaverick Marketplace have **locked Main Info and Editions** — you can only edit Settings
* Rich text formatting (bold, italic, underline, lists, links) is available in Guide, Alert, and question text fields on the web

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://documentation.taskmaverick.com/missions/how-to-guides/build-a-mission.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
